Why reach out to companies for personal household storage?

Your need to reach out to storage companies to keep personal items can be due to various reasons. Perhaps you might have found yourself moving to a new apartment. You might be downsizing in light of your upcoming move to college. Maybe you are welcoming a new family member.

Whichever it may be, Storage in Dubai is the ideal place to keep your personal items.

Tips for preparing your items

It is quite easy to get entangled in the excitement of perhaps moving or refurbishing your home. Almost so tat you lose track of the basics. There are heaps of convenient and cost efficient ways to prepare your items and we are here to tell you all about it.

1. Do your research

You should know, things like your pets or ammunition will not be accepted by companies. These are the obvious few, obviously companies will have certain other things that they will not accept. So, do your research ahead of time. This will save you the hassle and time of having to revise decisions later on.

Some items you probably might not be able to keep in storage include chemicals, gasoline, paint, fertilizer, fireworks, explosives or ammunition, narcotics etc. Although we suggest you double check with your potential storage company in advance.

2. What are you keeping in personal household storage?

Now, we assume you are done and over with your research. Next you must consider what you actually want to keep in storage. Since your stuff will include personal items, pay attention to how much you are putting in storage. Your personal items can range from anything in between furniture, clothes and more.

If you are in money saving mode, you might want to consider how much space your items will require. More space will require you to spend more. So before you resort to the storage option, maybe consider whether you actually need these items. You can either donate or sell them if you will no longer need it.

3. Clean your items

Have you kept your personal household items dormant for a while? Chances are they would be dusty or unclean. This is completely normal. What is important is that you give them a nice clean up prior to putting them in storage. You could vacuum your stuff too.

What this does is that it cleans your items thoroughly, getting rid of the dust that can damage your appliances or furniture in the long term. Lets not forget that awesmul musty scent we want to avoid.

This also helps get rid of pests, it left unremoved will cause immeasurable damage. Not only will your items be affected, but the entire facility and household items of other customers.

using a spray that is an all purpose cleaner to wipe surfaces, vacuuimgn cushions and furniture are some ways to give your items a nice clean up.

4. Clean the unit

Merely cleaning your items will not be sufficient if the storage unit itself is unclean. Dust or mosture can seep through and damage your items if not. SO be sure to clean the surfaces of your storage unit thoroughly in advance. We also suggest you examine the facility for any holes or cracks that will pave way to dust, moisture or pests.

5. Make a list of you items

It is quite easy to misplace items if you are caught in the midst of a move. Make an inventory of the things you are hoping to keep in storage. This is especially helpful if you you have multiple things to put in storage. Lets be honest, it is quite easy to misplace those small items, specially once you have tossed them into a box.

In case of an emergency, it is just a matter of referring to the list to know whether you have put those items in storage. This we think is one of the most convenient methods to keep an eye on your household items.

6. Put your items for personal household storage in boxes

Now that you have gotten past the preliminaries, next step is to pack your items. While you can just toss them in the facility or the locker you are provided, it is best to compartmentalize. This is a lot more organized and will protect your items better.

Boxes are convenient because they will hold on to your items for you. They are the best way to stay organized during a move. You  can even use bins. Plastic or cardboard are your typical options.

What is even better is using boxes that are made of plastic instead of card board. While they will let you see through them easily so you know exactly what is in them, they are durable too. Letting you keep them for a longer period of time without the worry wear and tear. Trust us when we say this, your boxes will be moved around quite a bit. So keeping them in plastic boxes will protect your items in personal household storage better.

Blankets as well as paper used for moving and packing will keep your items secure while they are in storage. If your items include TVs, computers or even mirrors, blankets might be best at securing them in their respective boxes.

7. Label your items

Now that you have neatly and carefully packed your items, the next task is labelling. As we said before, it is very easy to not know exactly what went where. You will need to when you need to resurface your personal belongings. Label the boxes so you will not have to pull everything out to find that one tiny item.

You can label them as ‘living room’, ‘porch’, ‘attic’, ‘kitchen’ etc.

8. Safeguarding sensitive items in personal household storage

You might have certain bits of clothing, artwork or valuable furniture that must be handled with care. For instance, leather bags and fur coats must be stored in temperature controlled facilities. This should be done so that they retain their value.

Or you might be owning certain artwork or paintings that are of high value. These must be properly wrapped and kept in temperature controlled units to maintain their pristine condition.

Mae sure they are sealed using special wrapping or boxes are tightly sealed. Baggies can also be used depending on the size of your items. Use special covering for clothing items such as jackets or coats. Furniture can also be sealed off adequately in climate controlled facilities so they are out of reach from dust, pests and moisture.

9. Large items can be disassembled

realistically speaking, it is not practical to put an entire bed in storage. Or furniture. They are simply too big. They are probably not move friendly if they cannot be deconstructed. Hence try disassemling items that can be disassembled. This is create space as well as save some within the storage unit.

For pictures or artwork, remove the frames as they will be subject to damage, wear and tear if not. All of which we want to avoid.

10. Appliance prep

Electrical appliances that most include kitchen items must be carefully packed. They may come with wiring and compartments that must be disassembled before the move. Foam is an excellent method to protect them when boxed.

Be sure to also clean them because they may contain traces of food or water- safe haven for pests and other nasty creatures we want to avoid.
